The Recently Adopted Dog

Let us help you start off on the right foot with your rescue! We have a plan to make your new canine a true member of your family! If you have not yet adopted your dog, here is a great resource on how to choose the right dog for your family.

The first 12 weeks are critical in the success of your new dog. We strongly recommend that every new adopted dog parent enroll in ourĀ  “New Additions” online class. This is a self paced course that will help you understand:
  • The Decompression, Honeymoon, and Acclimation periods of newly adopted dog
  • Easy exercises that build a solid foundation for obedience
  • Games and exercises that help build trust and self-confidence for your new dog
  • Common mistakes newly adopted pet parents make
We do offer an in-person class for dogs that have been in their new homes for more than 8 weeks. Click here for more info & upcoming classes.

Our New Additions class can help you not only understand the challenges you may face, but teach you how to work through them! This four week class will help you transition your dog from a shelter or rescue dog to a happy and focused family member.

This class will help you:

  • How to establish leadership skills and routines

  • Help your dog gain confidence in themselves and you

  • Build focus and connection through positive reinforcement training

  • Introduce the concept of impulse control and basic obedience cues

  • Set your dog up to succeed and create a lasting bond

  • Understand the “honeymoon period” and what drives problem behaviors

  • Prepare you to continue your education with your canine companion

This class is appropriate for dogs with little-to-no training, ages 9 months and older, who have been adopted from a shelter or rescue group within the last 3 months.

What you will need:

  • A variety of high value treats

  • Buckle or martingale collar or no-pull harness (Freedom No-Pull harnesses are available in our retail area), 6-foot leash, and a flat mat, towel, or blanket. Pinch/prong collars, choke chains, e-collars, and extendable leashes are not allowed in class.
