What is Marker Training?
How do you tell your puppy/dog that they are doing something you like? How do you tell your dog he is oing the “right thing?”
Marker training is using a simple word or sound* to tell your puppy/dog that you are pleased and they have earned a reward. Think of it as an “A+” for young children, then they get a sticker or a lollipop.
We use the word “YES” to mark the good behavior. Behaviors that are rewarded are repeated!
Why Use a Marker?
A verbal marker, when paired with a reward such as food, becomes associated with the pleasure the reward brings. This emotional association allows you to reduce the amount of food rewards you use, over time, or transfer the reward to something else your dog enjoys, such as opening a door or throwing a ball.
*A clicker can also be used to mark the behavior you want.
