Dogs learn through observation skills, as dogs communicate primarily through body language. The verbal cues humans use, such as “sit,” become secondary cues that the dog learns through repetition. Hand signals, which are created through luring, are often more widely recognized by our dog.
Some tips for success:
- Don’t repeat verbal cues. Say the word, show the puppy/dog what you want through luring, then pay the puppy/dog for the right response
- Don’t use verbal cues with an angry tone of voice. While you may get a response, your puppy/dog will quickly associate you with intimidation and possibly fear.
- You don’t have to worry about being “dominant” or “alpha.” These are buzz words that set up a conflict for both you and your dog!
- Be consistent! Everyone should be on the same page at home!
