Intro to Fear, Reactivity & Aggression

When working with a fearful, reactive or aggressive dog it is even more important to do your research before hiring a ‘trainer‘….

All “training” is not created equal….Not only are there many different training methods out there, there are also many different levels of expertise.

We always recommend finding a positive reinforcement trainer, especially one with the CPDT-KA credentials. Those credentials mean that the trainer has passed a comprehensive exam certifying they have a thorough understanding of science based learning theory and training techniques. They also adhere to the LIMA “Least Invasive Minimally Aversive” principles.

When dealing with fear, reactivity or aggression, we recommend taking this a step further and finding a Certified Behavior Consultant or at least someone skilled in dealing with dog behavior challenges and not just training techniques.

We strongly believe that learning should NOT hurt! When working with a fearful dog it is even more important for them to trust you. You need to be their security blanket, so to speak. By using fear and pain to train, you eliminate that possibility. When your dog is in the face of a scary trigger they cannot even turn to you for support.

Be careful of quick fixes and guarantees. Dogs are living, sentient creatures- not electronic appliances. There is nothing absolute in dog training. If you find a skilled trainer or behavior consultant and follow a well scripted training & behavior modification plan, you can expect to see some amazing results, but you MUST BE CONSISTENT!

It is important to understand that reactivity and aggression are never CURED. They can be drastically reduced but any animal, when put in a situation they deem scary or threatening will resort to some sort of aggressive behavior. Our goal is to teach the dog how to handle the vast majority of situations that may be presented to them in life so they no longer feel the need to act aggressively in the first place.
